Known as Southern California’s Wine Country, Temecula Valley offers world-class wines produced from classic wine grapes like cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, as well as Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Rhône varieties which thrive in the Mediterranean-like climate. It also beguiles with rolling hills reminiscent of parts of Tuscany, and a warm, welcoming vibe synonymous with California living.

While generally known for wine, Temecula Valley is emerging as an exciting culinary destination, with many restaurants tucked among the vines at the wineries themselves. We’ve compiled a list of some of our favorites, from casual to upscale, for the foodie and wine enthusiast alike.

Fredericksburg, located less than two hours from the capital city, Austin, is one of Texas’ top travel destinations. The popularity of wine road 290 and the charming German atmosphere have attracted visitors to Fredericksburg for decades. The demand for fine food and wine is met by ambitious and creative new restaurants, with some old favorites, too. From a Texas-size steak to German food or a glass of Austrian wine served in a nineteenth-century limestone schoolhouse, you will not want for variety when it comes to dining in Fredericksburg. Here are the nine best restaurants to check out while visiting.

1
Restaurants / Fredericksburg

Vaudeville

Vaudeville is part bistro, part supper club, and part boutique shopping experience, located in the heart of Fredericksburg’s historic downtown. Daily lunch specials, like Crawfish Etouffé, incorporate the best flavors from around the world with an American spin. Dinner is served on Friday and Saturday nights only, with a prix fixe menu. The wine list is heavy on Italian, French, and California wines, with a couple of Texans in the mix. There’s also a good selection of sparkling wines.

Insider Tip

Locals favor Sunday Buttermilk Fried Chicken brunch. Get there early as the line begins before 11:00 am.

Known for their hand-cut sausages and schnitzel, The Ausländer also serves American classics like chicken sandwiches and hamburgers, including a classic burger and a schnitzel burger. The menu features a large variety of beers from around the world, but try a local beer and sausage for a blend of Texas and Bavaria.

Cabernet Grill

Cabernet Grill is the quintessential Texas Hill Country fine dining experience, where flavors of Texas and the southwest are paired with the largest Texas wine list in the state. If it’s your first time dining at Cabernet Grill, try the Texas Mixed Grill which includes jalapeno quail, grilled shrimp, and a smoked pork tenderloin medallion. The Mexican street corn side is also a must. Cabernet Grill’s long-time sommelier, Elizabeth Rodriguez, has recently expanded the wine list to include over 180 Texas wines, so don’t miss pairing your meal with a glass or bottle.

Insider Tip

If the weather is nice, sit outside to enjoy the pretty patio and water gardens all lit up with fairy lights. It’s so romantic you may just fall in love with the Hill Country and decide to stay. Note that outdoor dining is on a first come, first served basis.

Otto’s

Otto’s is an ode to fine dining that showcases the German heritage of Fredericksburg. The farm-to-table menu is carefully curated to highlight what’s available and in season. Starters include a twist on a German-style pretzel served with brie and crème fraiche, as well as the Flammkuchen, which is a bit like a tart flambé, topped with crème fraiche, Spanish chorizo sugo, arugula, pickled red peppers, and blue cheese crumbles. The wine and beer menu features Austrian and German flavors as well as those of Texas and California. Since the venue is a small frame house and seating is limited, just be sure to make a reservation.

Insider Tip

Sunday brunch at Otto’s is truly divine, featuring a menu of unique breakfast and lunch items. There’s a good selection of standard drinks such as mimosas and bloody marys, but take a chance on one of the more creative cocktails.

Hill Top Cafe

Hill Top Cafe has 40 years of history, family, good food, and music. Housed in an old gas station, the location is a bit out of the way, but worth the drive. Owner Johnny Nicolas and his late wife Brenda transformed the venue into more than a restaurant; Hill Top is an experience. Go for the excellent Greek-Cajun-inspired food and atmosphere, or just go for the live music. Over the years, Hill Top has hosted such famous musicians as Eric Clapton, Jimmie Vaughan, and Bonnie Raitt, which isn’t surprising given Johnny’s successful music career in the Grammy winning band, Asleep At The Wheel.

Insider Tip

Hill Top Cafe also has a bed and breakfast for those that want to stay up late and listen to music or just gaze at the star-filled sky without having to venture far after dinner.

Pontotoc Vineyard

Pontotoc Vineyard and Weingarten was created in the image of a Viennese Heurigen. A Heurigen is a wine bar located in the vineyards where locals bring a picnic basket and enjoy the wine produced by that vineyard. Though Pontotoc is not in the vineyards, it is located in a historic limestone building surrounded by old oak trees, and while the winery is not technically a restaurant, you can order a picnic basket made by the owners to go with your estate wine. Texas sausage, local bread, and homemade pimento cheese are a few of the goodies you’ll find inside. Sit outside, listen to great music, and enjoy one of the most unique wine gardens in the area.

Insider Tip

Kids are welcome and there are alcohol-free beverage options.

Emma + Ollie

Emma + Ollie is a restaurant and bakery offering delicious food and mouthwatering desserts served in a cozy ‘40s bungalow just off of Fredericksburg’s Main Street. The food is always fresh and many ingredients come from their garden. Entree favorites include the salmon cobb salad and the po-boy sandwiches, but be sure to save room for the desserts, which will make you think of visiting your grandmother. People line up for the lemon bars and hello dollies, but it’s all decadent in the best way.

Insider Tip

Emma + Ollie is open for breakfast Tuesday through Friday and brunch on Saturday, but you can always stop in simply to purchase their homemade desserts to go.

Its vineyards may have put Sonoma County on the map, but to savor the richness of this vast and varied pocket of Wine Country, you must dig into its culinary landscape and explore its breathtaking natural beauty. Beyond the tidy rows of grapevines, there are rolling hills of unkempt farmland speckled with dairy cows, goats, and sheep used to make Sonoma’s award-winning cheeses. On the western edge, there are miles of rugged coastline filled with fresh, briny shellfish, and deep inside the county, there are artisan makers churning out everything from European-style breads, to olive oils and preserves, to fermented specialties like krauts, kombucha, beer, and cider. It’s a county filled with farmers, artists, winemakers, and chefs, all of whom share a love of Sonoma’s simple pleasures and relish in the bounty if its land.

SONOMA COAST

About sixty miles north of the Golden Gate Bridge, California’s famous Pacific Coast Highway (AKA Highway 1) winds through a cinematic, 55-mile seaside road full of rocky cliffs, secluded coves, and long stretches of beach often cloaked in a chilly, grey fog.

With only a handful of small towns along the way, it’s easy to immerse oneself in the rugged natural beauty of Sonoma’s coast in solitude and find total fulfillment with little more than epic views and a warm bowl of clam chowder from Spud Point Crab Company in Bodega Bay. Clear, crisp days in March through June offer the best opportunities for whale watching at Bodega Head, but Goat Rock State Beach, just south of Jenner, is a favorite gathering spot for the local harbor seal and sea lion populations year-round.

Further north in Jenner, where the mouth of the Russian River meets the Pacific, adventurers can book kayaks through WaterTreks Eco Tours and paddle through calm waters alongside blue herons and harbor seals.

DRY CREEK VALLEY

It’s no wonder Dry Creek Valley is a favorite destination for weekenders. Offering both a casual, quintessential Sonoma Wine Country experience of salt-of-the-earth growers and award-winning wines, coupled with upscale lodging, shopping, and restaurants in nearby Healdsburg, travelers get to enjoy the best of both worlds.

Depending on how leisurely you want to savor this AVA, you could head to Truett Hurst Winery and settle in for the day with sandwiches from nearby Dry Creek General Store. Enjoy a bottle of the winery’s Old Vine Zinfandel with picnic fare on their biodynamic farm and keep your eyes out on the water, where you may also catch a glimpse of the annual salmon run splashing before your eyes. Or bring a little competition to your relaxation by reserving a game of bocce at Dry Creek Vineyard’s beautiful, Loire Valley inspired tasting room.

To experience more of Dry Creek Valley, add Ferrari-Carano to your itinerary for vineyard select Chardonnay, Unti Vineyards for interesting Rhone and Italian varietals, Papapietro Perry for exceptional, single vineyard pinot noir, and Bella Vineyards for a cave tasting of their small lot zinfandel. If you fall in love with Bella’s wines, you may be just as charmed with their guest cottages both on their farm and in downtown Healdsburg.

RUSSIAN RIVER

A popular vacation spot for San Franciscans, Sonoma’s Russian River region draws a mix of thrill seekers, food and wine enthusiasts, and weekenders looking to unplug from their daily grind. At the heart of this region is the Bohemian Highway, a 10-mile stretch of road said to be one of California’s most scenic drives. A mix of pastoral countryside and ancient redwood groves, this winding drive is best enjoyed with windows down, a good playlist and fresh-from-the-oven treat from Wild Flour Bread at the southern end of the highway in the tiny town of Freestone.

On warm days, vacationers flock to the Russian river for kayaking, paddleboarding, or to enjoy a laid-back afternoon of lounging on the shore of Johnson’s Beach, while more adventurous types bring floats to ride down the river.

To experience the grandeur of California’s famous trees, a hike at Armstrong Redwoods State National Reserve is a must-do.

Given its close proximity to the Sonoma Coast, this cool-climate AVA produces standout chardonnay and pinot noir. Try some of the region’s finest at Littorai Wines, Gary Farrell Vineyards & Winery, and Lynmar Estate Winery. More wineries to visit include Deloach Vineyards, Inman Family Wines, and Sonoma-Cutrer Vineyards. Or experience an entirely different kind of tasting at El Barrio, Guerneville’s hip, new mezcal and tequila bar from the owners Boon Hotel + Spa.

ALEXANDER VALLEY

Like a sleeping giant, Alexander Valley is about to have its moment. Comprised of hilly terrain from the Mayacamas, rich, fertile soils from the Russian River bed, and Sonoma’s warmest climate, this region is cabernet sauvignon country, and its productions are most frequently compared to those of both Napa and Bordeaux. While its the largest and most widely planted AVA in the county, it’s also one of the least explored. Covering the northeastern quarter of Sonoma, Alexander Valley is quietly growing exceptional fruit, just like generations past.

Stretching from the northern edge of Healdsburg, along the Russian River, up to Cloverdale, the this vast Wine Country region offers picturesque vineyard scenery to rival anywhere in Sonoma.

Discover small, unassuming, family-owned wineries with big heart and exceptional wines like J. Rickards Winery in Cloverdale, Garden Creek Vineyards in Geyserville, and Stuhlmuller Vineyards in Healdsburg.

In Geyserville, be sure to stop into Pech Merle Winery, a hip and playful tasting room with delicious Sonoma County wines, before indulging in one of the region’s culinary gems, Diavola Pizzeria and Salumeria, an innovative, farm-to-table Italian restaurant where The Dictator Pizza, topped with sliced ribeye, kimchee, kewpie mayonnaise, and serrano chiles, is a must.

On the southeastern corner of Sonoma County, just a 45- minute drive from San Francisco, you’ll find the charming, historic town of Sonoma. Mission San Francisco Solano, California’s last and northernmost mission, along with historic buildings and barracks from General Vallejo’s era, surround the town square, giving this friendly farming community an old world vibe.

Amongst cobblestone alleyways and century-old buildings, some of the area’s finest reds grown from the Valley’s famous Moon Mountain district are poured daily just off the plaza inside Kamen Estate Wines‘ modern tasting room. Travel back to the time of the pioneers with a visit to the Buena Vista Winery tasting room just outside town.

Experience more of Sonoma Valley’s unique flavor just up the road in the tiny village of Glen Ellen. Made famous by its former resident, Jack London, whose namesake park is a popular stop for hikers, picnic-goers,and history buffs, this little town is hub of great food and wine.

While in Glen Ellen, schedule a tour at the Benziger Family Winery to get a behind-the-scenes look at their biodynamically farmed Sonoma Mountain estate. Or stop by Imagery Estate Winery to try some of their unusual varietals, paired with their fabulous art collection. For a casual tasting and insider’s look at wine production, visit Loxton Cellars, where the friendly Aussie winemaker will guide you through his entire process from grape to bottle.

Finish your wine tastings just a few clicks north on Highway 12 with Wine Country comfort food at Kenwood’s popular new restaurant, Tips Roadside.

SANTA ROSA AND CENTRAL SONOMA COUNTY

Centrally located in the heart of the county, Santa Rosa is Sonoma’s largest and most diverse city, offering a mix of culture, arts, restaurants, and nightlife, including world class performances at Luther Burbank Center For the Arts.

Into retro? Check in at the Sandman Hotel, a beautifully renovated motor-lodge with a throw-back feel, or the new Astro Motel, a playfully restored, mid-century motor lodge effortlessly blends kitchy detail, modern design, and Sonoma hospitality. The Astro’s owners run the popular restaurant The Spinster Sisters a few blocks away, where guests enjoy farm-fresh “Sonoma County Cuisine” from breakfast through dinner.

Often referred to as “beer city,” Santa Rosa is also home to world-famous Russian River Brewing Company, along with a growing community of smaller craft beer producers in and around Santa Rosa.

Just about seven miles west of town in Sebastopol, artists, farmers and hippies have created an eclectic and innovative hub of local food and drink culture beyond beer and wine.

Sample probiotic elixirs at The Kefiry, artisan gin at Spirit Works Distillery inside The Barlow community marketplace and sustainably caught fish at the new locals hangout, Handline. If you find yourself at The Barlow, circle back to wine tasting at the MacPhail Tasting Lounge.

For another taste of this diverse region, visit Petaluma. Located seventeen miles south of Santa Rosa and surrounded by historic farms, Petaluma’s downtown district is filled with blocks of stunning Victorian homes, antique shops and delicious fare from the surrounding land and sea. Tucked inside the beautifully restored Hotel Petaluma, enjoy oysters and very local wines from “less than 30 miles away” at The Shuckery and don’t skip town without a visit to Della Fattoria for salt-studded loaf of their Meyer-Lemon Rosemary bread.

It’s a familiar relationship, one that has gone back multiple generations, when her family used to travel by way of ferry and horse-drawn carriage from Berkeley to West Marin’s beautiful Tomales Bay to enjoy the summer months.

goats in a pen West Marin Food & Farm tours, which began in 2012, are packed with flavor, and really the only way you can fully understand is to experience one yourself. The dairy delightful Cheese Lover’s Tour is one of two available through Wine Country Experiences and we wanted to shed light on each delicious element. Boasting visits to three established West Marin creameries, Elizabeth gives exclusive access to private farms and a behind-the-scenes taste of the region’s artisan cheesemaking.

Cheese Lover’s Tour
Available Year-round, Wednesday through Friday, and Sunday

Cowgirl Creamery cheese aging Cowgirl Creamery at Tomales Bay Foods
The adventure begins in Point Reyes Station, where you’ll meet Elizabeth and new, cheese lovin’ friends (typically there’s between 4-7 people in a group) at the famed Cowgirl Creamery. The creamery was founded in 1994 by Sue Conley and Peggy Smith, two women who had been intertwined in the food scene for some years, as a bonus to the opening of Tomales Bay Foods in a renovated barn in this quaint, Marin town. The structure housed a small cheese-making room and cheese dreams were pursued. Over the course of the last 20+ years, Cowgirl Creamery has grown from a modest room and a bit of curiosity, to a heavily awarded creamery with four retail stores, two production locations, and sales being made in over 500 additional retailers.

Cowgirl Creamery cheese While this location only produces their pundgent, triple cream variety, Red Hawk, visitors on West Marin Food & Farm Tours can get an inside look (and taste!) of all their renowned cheeses. As you enter the building, windows welcome viewers to take a peek into the original facility and watch as each step of the process is completed. The tour official begins with munching cheese-centric, baked delights care of Bovine Bakery and a lesson in past and present farming and food production in Marin from Elizabeth. As soon as the last crumb is nabbed, Elizabeth gets into the good stuff (the cheese, of course) and the group can try the full bounty of regularly produced aged and fresh cheeses, and a taste of their seasonal creation.

Insider Tip: Plan on arriving at Tomales Bay Foods early to explore the market and the many goods for sale. The company continues to stay true to their ethos of supporting the community and artisan cheesemaking, and offers over 200 additional cheeses from around the globe alongside their own.

man holding baby goat Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery
Elizabeth will take the wheel as the whole gang hops into the West Marin Food & Farm Tours’ van for a picturesque drive through West Marin. Head up the eastern coast of Tomales Bay, where salty, steady waters host oyster farms and unbelievable views of rolling hills and the tree lined Point Reyes National Seashore park. After winding up the coast and heading inland just past the small town of Tomales, you’ll reach Toluma Farms, the home of the Tomales Farmstead Creamery.

The property is 160-acres, but the multiple barns, cheesemaking facility, and beautiful main home welcome you to the farm. Owners, David Jablons and Tamara Hicks, purchased the property in 2003 and worked with multiple agricultural agencies to restore the land in order to properly transition it back to a goat and sheep dairy. In 2012, they completed the final stage of the property’s transformation and started their onsite creamery.

jar of honey Join the farm team for the day, and explore the in’s and out’s of this dynamic farm and creamery. Step into their milking barn, where you’ll learn how the animals are milked first hand. Then follow the journey, from milk to cheese, at the creamery building.

Your group will take a break to enjoy a picnic, curated by Elizabeth, on the wraparound porch of the modern farmhouse. Now’s the chance to try each one of the creamery’s cheeses, all with names from the Miwok, the indigenous Native Americans from the region. The cheeses are complemented by local breads, charcuterie, and olive oil, fruit, and even a sparkling, honey wine produced just down the road.

Insider Tip: Make sure you packed comfortable shoes that you’re willing to get potentially messy. The team at Toluma Farms gives you an in-depth tour, and this includes going in and out of the barns and pens where the animals live and are milked.

Double 8 Dairy cows Double 8 Dairy
Say goodbye to your new animal friends with a full stomach, and join Elizabeth as you continue to explore the diverse region. The last stop is Double 8 Dairy, a water buffalo farm located in West Petaluma.

This small farm is the home to a growing herd of buffalo and Jersey cows. The farm is a pioneer, as it’s breeding water buffalo for milking for the first time in the United States. Melissa, who raises the animals, will introduce you to the ladies and their calves. You’ll get to say hello, meet these gentle giants, and probably receive a friendly lick in return. Their facilities house a milking barn with sixteen stations, in two sets of eight. Hence the name Double 8. The water buffalo are milked twice daily, so if timing works out, you’ll have a chance to see the full process — from their machinery and facilities, watching the buffalo be milked, to the final crème de la crème — a taste of their delicious wares.

Insider Tip: Typically on a tour of Double 8, you’ll have a chance to try one of their delicious, dairy products. This could be fresh cheese or some of their mouth-watering, seasonally-flavored gelato. But if it’s a really good day, you may have a chance to interact with the dairy’s generous cheesemaker, who may share warm ricotta, flavorful buffalo mozzarella, and give you a bit more insight into the creamery’s production.

The kitchens of Charlottesville, Virginia are where Southern comfort food meet east coast upscale dining. At most restaurants, you can mow down some pimento cheese or a fantastic steak, but there are some unique surprises to be found in this trendy city, too, like imaginative takes on quintessential fried chicken, oysters Rockefeller, or stunning farm-fresh fare.

1
Restaurants /

The Ivy Inn Restaurant

Old Virginia classics are elevated to upscale dining heights at the The Ivy Inn Restaurant, which is just as charming as it sounds. Down-home favorites like lamb chops or salmon are served here with class and flavor that would make any big city eatery jealous, and country-eating appetizers like shrimp ‘n grits and tomato biscuit pie cozy up to fancier fare like foie gras.

Insider Tip

Beefed out? Try the free range bison steak, which has far less fat than the bovine version.

Restaurants /

Hamiltons’ at First & Main

This downtown Charlottesville restaurant serves contemporary American cuisine and is a favorite among locals, travelers, and university students. Watch the sunset from the outdoor patio and you’ll understand why Charlottesville residents often visit this fine dining establishment several times a month. Another reason: the hushpuppies, made with Hamiltons’ at First & Main’s inventive take on pimento cheese, a Southern favorite.

Insider Tip

Vegetarians can feast on the daily “blue plate special,” a meatless entrée that changes daily.

Restaurants /

Downtown Grille

While Asian fusion cuisine and molecular gastronomy definitely have their place, sometimes the classics, like grilled steaks and seafood served on spotless white tablecloths, are what count. Downtown Grille isn’t stuffy or excessively inventive, but the chefs here create American wonders with class every night. Like any steakhouse worth opening your wallet for, the martinis are strong and expertly crafted.

Insider Tip

Don’t retreat from the greens just because you’re at a spot famous for meat—the iceberg wedge and classic caesar salad are surprisingly satisfying.

Details
5
Restaurants /

Sultan Kebab

Sultan Kebab brings the succulent flavors of Istanbul to the middle of Virginia, and this relaxed restaurant is terrific for those wanting to eat well but who also desire a laid-back vibe. The platters of kebabs of kofte will satisfy several hungry people, and the sandwiches slammed into homemade pita bread are tasty American takes on Mediterranean favorites. Baklava and rice pudding are available with Turkish coffee—some of the strongest brew available.

Insider Tip

Get the hummus casserole, a version of the Middle Eastern dip, baked with tomatoes and cheese.

Details
6
Restaurants /

Michie Tavern

Scrumptious fried chicken and peach cobbler, buttermilk biscuits and mashed potatoes—The Ordinary at Michie Tavern serves favorites just like your mom used to make: that is, if your mother was a fantastic cook who knew how to push Southern comfort food to a soul-satisfying limit. Housed inside a historic building, a visit to this eatery is like a trip to the early 1800s (the staff even dresses in period outfits), and the food is served buffet-style with flavors that are anything but hokey.

Insider Tip

Since it is so close to Monticello, The Ordinary at Michie Tavern is an appropriate capper to a tour of Thomas Jefferson’s old estate.

Details
8
Restaurants /

Public Fish and Oyster

From the Atlantic and Pacific coasts, Public Fish and Oyster selects only the finest oysters—the meaty gems of the ocean—to serve raw everyday. Order a martini with an orange twist alongside a plate of Oysters Rockefeller and you’ll feel like a captain of industry from another era, all at a reasonable price point. The tasty little morsels also pop up in the oyster stew, oyster Lyonnaise, and the PFO pan roast.

Insider Tip

If you aren’t in the mood for raw oysters, opt for the moules frite: deliciously cooked mussels with Belgian-style fried potatoes.

Details
9
Restaurants /

Old Mill Room

With its rich wood walls and ceiling, eating at the Old Mill Room offers a quaint but elegant experience, where everyone who steps in the door is automatically a Virginia gentleman or lady. A fireplace roars while friendly servers bring fresh seafood and carefully-made martinis, and contemporary creations like panko-encrusted ahi tuna or wild rice-stuffed zucchini show off that the chefs are still as inventive as those from any upscale option in a bigger city.

Insider Tip

The doors of the Old Mill Room open early, so stop in for a gourmet breakfast to start your journey through Virginia’s wine country.

Julia Child’s Favorite Taco Joint

la-super-rica-680
La Super Rica
622 North Milpas St.
Santa Barbara, CA 93103
(805) 963-4940
TripAdvisor: 4 stars, 381 Reviews
Reservations: Not accepted

Julia Child famously endorsed this turquoise taco palace in Bon Appetit (back in 1996), and La Super Rica Taqueria still remains a Santa Barbara favorite for both tourists and locals alike. Expect a long line (about an hour’s wait) on Milpas Street, the Mexican neighborhood of Santa Barbara. Though La Super Rica fancies itself a taqueria, there are several other items on the menu worth ordering, like tamales and chile con queso. Most dishes will involve one or two of their fresh, handmade a la minute tortilla’s, so order anything that will have you chomping on one of those.
Insider tip: If you can tempt yourself away from ordering a traditional taco, opt for #16, The Super Rica Especial: a loaded tortilla with fresh poblanos, mixed with a nutty swiss-like cheese and finished off with mouthwatering marinated pork—it’s a local favorite.

A Real-Deal Taqueria

lilys-tacos-680

Lilly’s Tacos
310 Chapala St
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
(805) 966-9180
TripAdvisor: 4.5 stars, 78 reviews
Reservations: Not accepted

South of Milpas, closer to State Street and a little off the beaten path, is Lilly’s Tacos, a true taqueria with cheap fare and big flavor. Where La Super Rica offers a little bit of everything, the only items on the menu here are tacos. Come armed with cash, though you won’t need too much, since they’re only $1.70 a pop. The menu board, presented in Spanish with English translations, delivers all the usual suspects like asada (beef) and adobada (marinated pork). But if you’re feeling a little more adventurous, give the ojo de res a try—that’s Spanish for “beef eye.”
Insider tip: Don’t walk away from the counter without hitting up the salsa bar first; they have a ridiculous amount of different hot sauces and salsas ranging from mild to “I need a gallon of milk, stat.”

The Hippest Restaurant in Santa Barbara

the-lark-680
The Lark
131 Anacapa St.
Santa Barbara, CA 93101
(805) 284-0370
TripAdvisor: 4.5 stars, 40 reviews
Reservations: Not required

A buzz every night with an energetic and posh crowd, The Lark is Santa Barbara’s hottest restaurant in the cool and lively Funk Zone. With dim lighting, superbly-crafted cocktails, a fabulous outdoor patio, and a former rock and roll chef, the atmosphere is decidedly fun, and the food is amazing (the roasted chicken is a showstopper). But first things first: you’re greeted with complimentary spiced popcorn upon arrival. A ploy, perhaps, to get you salivating and thirsty, for which they have a solution: thirst quenching artisanal cocktails. Ask for the Cutler Stagecoach Whiskey, a cocktail made with local fig jam.
Insider tip: The menu is really inventive, and can be a little overwhelming, so order some deviled eggs with crispy pancetta off the bat, before decision fatigue sets in.

A Foodies Farmers Market

santa-barbara-farmers-market-680
Santa Barbara Certified Farmers Market
(805) 962-5354
TripAdvisor: 5 stars, 35 reviews

There are a total of six farmers markets in Santa Barbara weekly, but this one, on Tuesdays and Saturdays, may be the best, offering a hefty selection of stands and goodies to oggle over. Grab some pistachios from any of the local booths to snack on in between wine tastings—just pace yourself, as it’s a feast for both the eyes and the stomach. Another bonus is that local musicians keep the market tapping to lively beat.
Insider tip: For the ultimate farmers market experience, Wine Cask Restaurant will take you on the Farmers Market Foodie Stroll with Chef David Rosner. Together, you’ll pick out the ingredients for a three-course dinner he’ll be preparing for you that evening, which you’ll enjoy at the Chef’s feasting bar with wine pairings.

Hiking for Wine Lovers

urban-wine-trail
Urban Wine Trail
TripAdvisor: 4.5 stars, 20 reviews

Imagine a hike with no sweating or panting, and stops along the way to quench your thirst—but with wine instead of water. This is the Urban Wine Trail, and it’s definitely a wine lover’s kind of hike. Your “trail map” will consist of wineries and tasting rooms in downtown Santa Barbara; it’s sort of a “choose your own” self-guided adventure—optimal for those who seek a little less structure and scheduling in their “hiking” tours. Pick and choose what looks fun and interesting, and skip what doesn’t.
Insider tip: Be sure to check out Au Bon Climat, the very “ABC” wines that put Santa Barbara on the map.

Winemakers Watering Hole

matteis-tavern-680
Mattei’s Tavern
2350 Railway Ave.
Los Olivos, CA 93441
(805) 688-3550
TripAdvisor: 5 stars, 58 Reviews
Reservations: Not required

Mattei’s Tavern feels a little less touristy than some of the other eateries, which may be one of the reasons locals love it so much. That, and the food: even the simplest of sharables, like grilled avocado with ponzu sauce, will have you fighting over whose half is bigger. Located in a historical, landmarked building that’s been fully renovated for a more modern feel, this is a dinner that will leave you savoring every bite, so allocate some time to linger. Take note that the wine list is curated by Eric Railsback, co-founder of Les Marchands, who stocks the list with rotating bottles of small-production local wines.
Insider tip: Mattei’s is comprised of several different rooms with various atmospheres, from intimate to boisterous. If you’re looking for a romantic evening, request the room with a table beside the fireplace.

Combining swanky hotels, world-class hyper-local fare, and dynamite wines is always a fragile balance—especially when you consider how utterly laid back the people of Santa Barbara Country are. But that’s why visitors have been flocking to this area of California for decades—to take it all in alongside the beauty of the crashing ocean and rolling hills.

The seafood served at restaurants in Monterey is legendary, and has long attracted appetites from across the globe. While some of the eateries around the city focus on tourists, there are still plenty of options where locals regale in the freshness and flavors of the land and sea, with flavors that balance the bold and the classic; here are some top picks:

1
Restaurants /

Montrio Bistro

Montrio Bistro is housed inside a converted firehouse built in 1910, and still retains its exposed brick charm. This sensibility for the past also inspires the chefs: the grilled steaks, salmon, and lamb chops are all standouts on the menu, which combines classic European inspirations with New American flavors. The wine list is long, and the staff is knowledgeable, so rest assured that the pairing recommendations are on point.

Insider Tip

Montrio Bistro is worth a visit just for the cocktails. Inventive creations like the Saving Private Ryan mix unusual ingredients like walnut liquor and smoked ice.

Monterey's Fish House

Heaping servings of seafood harvested straight from Monterey Bay will define your dining experience at Monterey’s Fish House. Expect a crowd and a potentially boisterous-yet-relaxed atmosphere, as well as classics including artisan seafood pasta and ahi tuna. The prawns are huge, and oysters are cooked over an oak-fired grill.

Insider Tip

Try Monterey’s Fish House’s refreshingly light take on the cioppino, a classic Northern California soup made from fresh seafood and tomatoes.

Sea Harvest Fish Market & Restaurants - Monterey

Sea Harvest Fish Market & Restaurant is quaintly decorated with colorful tablecloths and nautical bric-a-brac hung on the walls. Since it also doubles as a market, the seafood served in the restaurant is some of the freshest in Monterey, making it a local favorite. The squid, for example, is cleaned, tenderized, and breaded in-house for a terrific fried calamari, and the oysters and seafood kabobs make for a great light lunch.

Insider Tip

If you want to try whatever is in season, just ask your server for the freshest fish they have.

4
Restaurants /

Chart House - Monterey

Of all the tourist-focused spots on Monterey’s bustling Cannery Row, Chart House is one of the most refined options around, and the flavors of the food back up the atmosphere. The panoramic views of the Monterey Bay or the city lights beyond are worth the visit by themselves. For vegetarians, a giant salad bar means this seafood restaurant will probably be among your best choices on Cannery Row.

Insider Tip

If you make a reservation, ask if a corner table is available for window seating, overlooking the bay.
