California is the leading wine producing state in the United States (making nearly 90% of all American wine), which is not surprising given the state’s mild climate, coastal influences, and diverse soils all conducive to growing grapes. From Napa Valley to Sonoma County, Monterey to Santa Barbara, California is full of renowned wine regions that attract visitors from all over the world. Though Southern California is most known for its warm weather, glistening beaches, and picturesque coastal communities, it also has its own burgeoning wine region to note: Temecula Valley.

Conveniently located just an hour’s drive from San Diego and Orange County, Temecula Valley is home to nearly 50 wineries producing grapes from 50 different varieties. From grand estates with lavish tasting rooms to modern wineries with vineyard views, here are the best Temecula wineries to visit.

Stop by for a tasting at this Italian-style estate and pack a picnic to enjoy on the grounds, or plan to eat at the winery’s Mama Rosa’s Trattoria for a comforting taste of Italy.

Insider tip: Not only does Robert Renzoni Estate produce wine, but they also make a marinara sauce (based on a family recipe), homemade vinegar, and even a variety of spicy chile pepper sauces—all available to purchase from the winery.

BOTTAIA Winery

This sophisticated modern winery draws its inspiration from Italy—in fact, the name “Bottaia” is Italian for “cask aging room.” So it comes as no surprise that BOTTAIA specializes in wines made from Italian varieties. Experiences here range from more in-depth seated food pairings and wine blendings, to casual, by-the-glass tastings on The Deck, but regardless of which you choose, you can expect an elevated tasting experience designed to be informative and relaxing.

Insider tip: In the warmer months, don’t miss spending time at BOTTAIA’s sun-drenched, all-ages pool. In addition to a glistening pool, which is surrounded by vineyards, there’s a poolside cafe and cocktail bar, along with a splash pad for the kids… you can really make a whole day of it. If you are planning to stay a while, we suggest reserving a private cabine (an Italian-style private changing room), which includes a shower and bath amenities. It’s also just nice to have a space to store all your stuff.

Opt for a standard tasting in the intimate tasting room or, for a deeper dive into the inner workings of this family-run winery, reserve a tour and tasting to experience the process from “Dirt to Bottle.”

Insider tip: While this small winery is happy to welcome tasters without a reservation, if planning to arrive via limo or with a large group, call ahead and make an appointment to ensure there’s room.

The post Top 7 U.S. Wine Regions to Visit in 2023 first appeared on WineCountry.com.

]]>
While a trip to one of Europe’s famed wine regions is certainly worth the time and effort (lucky you if your 2023 European vacay is already in the works), you actually don’t need to travel that far – or blow all your PTO days – to enjoy an amazing wine-fueled getaway this year. Given that every state in the U.S. produces wine, chances are there is a destination-worthy wine region within driving distance from you, so let’s make 2023 the year to take advantage!

While California, which produces over 80% of the country’s wine, is home to many world-class wine regions (a few of which are on this list), don’t limit yourself to just the Golden State — there are many other wine regions scattered throughout the United States that are worthy of exploring. Ready to get inspired? Here are our picks for the seven U.S. wine regions to visit in 2023.

Something for Everyone

Santa Barbara County, California

Santa Barbara Wine Country may have flown under the radar 20 years ago, but nowadays this California destination is one of the most exciting wine regions in the U.S., drawing visitors from all over the world to enjoy its picturesque scenery, friendly hospitality, and, of course, world-class wine. In fact, Wine Enthusiast recently named Santa Barbara the ‘Top Wine Region of the Year 2021,’ recognizing this Central Coast gem for its efforts in sustainability, diversity of grapes, and varied wine tasting experiences, while Travel + Leisure named the Santa Ynez Valley to their list of ‘The 50 Best Places to Travel in 2022.’

Santa Barbara County is unique in that it’s situated between transverse mountain ranges, which funnels in cooling ocean influences from the Pacific to create a multitude of microclimates as well as significant temperature swings from day to night, allowing for a longer growing season. Add in Santa Barbara’s varied topography and diverse soil structures and you’ve got the perfect recipe for growing a wide range of grapes — over 70 different varieties, in fact.

Diversity is truly the name of the game in Santa Barbara Wine Country, where you can sip nuanced Pinot Noir, savory Syrah, racy Chardonnay, complex Cabernet Sauvignon, sophisticated Grenache, juicy Pét-Nat, and skin-fermented Sauvignon Blanc — all in the same day. The wine tasting experiences are just as varied, from casual tastings at urban tasting rooms to barrel tastings at converted warehouse spaces to elevated food and wine pairings at design-savvy wineries overlooking the vineyards. Another bonus: it’s not uncommon to find the winemaker pouring the wines themselves. One thing you won’t find much of, though, is pretense, as Santa Barbara is known for its easy going vibe and welcoming spirit, making it an easy place to want to visit again and again.

Fun Fact: The future is female (winemakers) in Santa Barbara County! This region has one of the nation’s highest percentages of female winemakers and women in wine.

Don’t Miss: Los Alamos
Laid-back Los Alamos may be quaint (blink and you may miss the exit off the 101), but don’t overlook this small town 15 miles north of Buellton. Once a dusty little western town, “Little LA” has since become a must-stop for foodies and oenophiles, where many of the region’s best restaurants — including a one Michelin-starred restaurant — are all on the same street. Come for a day of eating, then fill your time in between meals with excellent wine and antique shopping. You won’t be disappointed.

Sustainability at the Forefront

Sonoma County, California

Napa Valley is no doubt Northern California’s most famous wine region (and likely a place you’ll want to visit again and again), but if you haven’t yet experienced neighboring Sonoma County, now’s the time to change that. A must for wine lovers who appreciate good wine, local food, and the outdoors, laid-back Sonoma County is an expansive wine region featuring 19 appellations planted to over 60 grape varieties. Here, you’ll find everything from sparkling wines and lean, mineral-driven whites to complex, fruit-driven reds and bold wines from old vines — most of which are produced by family-owned wineries (some multigenerational) and sourced from sustainably-farmed vineyards.

While wine is a major draw, Sonoma County charms with its beautifully diverse landscapes, from the rugged coastline to the redwood forests, the bucolic countryside to the more mountainous areas, making it a wonderful place to spend time outside. It also stands out for its dedication to all things local, where a locavore mentality extends from restaurant menus highlighting local and seasonal produce, cheese, and meat, to hotels and shops featuring artworks and goods made by local artisans.

Fun Fact: 99% of Sonoma County’s vineyards are certified sustainable, making it the most sustainable winegrowing region in the world.

Don’t Miss: Healdsburg
The burgeoning town of Healdsburg is a wine and food lover’s paradise, thanks to its vibrant dining scene, chic urban tasting rooms, coffee shops, and unique culinary experiences. It’s certainly worthy of at least a day trip, but should you want to make Healdsburg your home base, there are plenty of places to stay in and around town, including charming inns, contemporary hotels, and high-end resorts.

Authentic Texan Hospitality

Texas Hill Country, Texas

Texas may not be the first place you’d think of when considering a wine tasting trip, but it has been steadily blazing a trail in wine. As the fifth largest wine producing state in the U.S., Texas is home to over 400 wineries scattered throughout the state, where you’ll find wines made from Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Tannat, and Viognier, as well as from lesser known grapes like Muscat Canelli, Lenoir, and the white hybrid of Blanc du Bois.

While there are eight delineated growing regions, the centrally located Texas Hill Country has become the hot spot for wine tourism. Conveniently situated outside the big cities of Austin and San Antonio, Texas Hill Country is a vast wine region offering visitors plenty of charming towns and natural scenery in which to explore. Add in a unique food scene, diverse wineries, and wide open spaces ideal for watching epic sunsets, and it’s no wonder this region captures the hearts of visitors from near and far.

Located in the heart of Texas Hill Country, the historic town of Fredericksburg is a great base for exploring the region’s numerous wineries. Here, you’ll find tasting rooms, good shopping, music venues, and noteworthy restaurants, all wrapped up with authentic Texas hospitality and a dose of German flair.

Fun Fact: Fredericksburg was settled by German immigrants over 160 years ago, and its German heritage can still be experienced through its food, architecture, and town festivals.

Don’t Miss: Texas Hill Country Cuisine
BBQ may be big in the Lone Star state, but you’d be surprised by the diversity of offerings you’ll find in Texas Hill Country, where restaurants celebrate the flavors and ingredients of Texas and throughout the world. Whether you’re craving Texas BBQ, Tex-Mex, Southern food, or authentic German schnitzels, you’ll love eating your way through the region.

World-Class Reds

Walla Walla, Washington

Five or ten years ago, you may not have been familiar with Walla Walla, but nowadays this small growing region along the Washington-Oregon border has a loyal following. So much so that in 2020, Walla Walla Valley – already named Wine Enthusiast’s 2019 ‘Wine Region of the Year’ – was crowned the winner of ‘America’s Best Wine Region’ by USA Today 10Best Readers’ Choice Awards, and defended its title to win again in 2021.

Situated in southeastern Washington, Walla Walla is famous for its sweet onions, but over the years this burgeoning region has cemented its status as a prime place for growing wine grapes, too. Boasting some of the state’s best vineyards and wineries, Walla Walla Valley is home to more than 120 wineries producing excellent examples of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Malbec, and Cabernet Franc.

The Walla Walla Valley AVA encompasses land in both Washington and Oregon, and wineries and tasting rooms are spread out throughout six distinct districts. Each area offers a different slice of Walla Walla, with wines and tasting experiences just as diverse. Foodies will also appreciate the eclectic mix of impressive restaurants in and around town, which each draw on the rich spectrum of seasonal produce and artisanal products from the region. Speaking of food, gourmands take note: Walla Walla’s 11th Annual Restaurant Month is happening this February, which celebrates the region’s epicurean delights through prix fixe menu offerings, lodging packages, wine, and more.

Fun Fact: Walla Walla Valley has the highest concentration of wineries in Washington and is home to some of Washington’s oldest wineries.

Don’t Miss: Exploring Downtown
Even if staying out amongst the vines, you won’t want to miss venturing into downtown Walla Walla. Though quaint, Walla Walla has a vibrant energy that makes it feel much bigger, yet without losing its small town charm. You won’t tire of the great selection of wine tasting rooms, art galleries, bakeries, and restaurants around every corner, while regular events like art walks and farmers markets only add to the experience.

Down-to-Earth Vibes

aerial view of vineyard

Edna Valley, California

While most people are familiar with California’s Paso Robles Wine Country (a lovely wine region if you haven’t been), nearby Edna Valley is much more of a hidden gem. Situated south of San Luis Obispo just five miles from the Pacific Ocean, Edna Valley is a small viticultural area noted for its cool coastal climate and long growing season — one of the longest in California, as a matter of fact. Here, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay shine, though diverse microclimates and rich oceanic and volcanic soils allow for several other grapes to flourish, including Albariño, Viognier, and Syrah.

Edna Valley may produce a steady stream of acclaimed wines, but the experience and vibe here remain down-to-earth and unhurried (this is the uber-friendly and laid-back Central Coast, after all). Small, family-owned wineries and larger, more modern wineries alike are known for their warm hospitality as much as they are for their wine. And, because the land here isn’t as inflated as some parts of California, you can still find quality bottles without enormously expensive price tags.

Fun Fact: Edna Valley’s winemaking history dates back to the 1800s, when Spanish missionaries planted some of the first mission grapes.

Don’t Miss: Biking
Edna Valley is a great place for cyclists, who will appreciate the region’s scenic vistas and quiet country roads. Of course, you’ll capture the same views of Bishop’s Peak and some of the other “Nine Sisters” (the chain of volcanic morros that dot the landscape) by driving, but exploring the valley on two wheels means stops for wine tastings and snacks are all the more essential.

The Birthplace of American Wine

vineyard view
Courtesy of VirginiaWine.org

Northern & Central Virginia

Virginia is recognized as the birthplace of American wine, when early colonists first attempted making wine here in the early 17th century, but it wasn’t until the early 1980s that the industry began to gain traction. Today, Virginia is home to over 4,000 acres of vineyards, where grapes like Viognier, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Norton have taken center stage.

Thomas Jefferson – you know, that famous scholar, statesman, and third President of the United States – was one of the early believers in growing grapes in his home state of Virginia. A master gardener and wine connoisseur, his first foray into viticulture began in 1773, though his efforts to grow European varieties failed again and again due to pests, disease, and unfavorable weather. Luckily, the pioneering spirit of this region helped grapes persevere, and today’s winemakers and growers have learned to work with the region’s continental climate to find their sweet spot; The last decade, especially, has shown a huge increase in both the quantity and quality of Virginia wine.

There are over 300 wineries in Virginia, spread throughout eight different AVAs. One of the most visited is Northern Virginia Wine Country, aka “D.C.’s Wine Country,” which is only an hour outside the nation’s capital. Despite this close proximity, thanks to its bucolic country roads, picturesque rolling hills, and historic towns, it manages to feel worlds away. Here you’ll find boutique wineries offering intimate experiences as well as larger, more design-forward estates, while about an hour further inland will land you in Central Virginia, where a thriving wine scene is offered alongside history, culture, and quality cuisine. Regardless of where you visit, beauty and charm abound, as well as pick-your-own apple orchards, historical sites, and photo-worthy landscapes.

Fun Fact: Norton, America’s oldest wine grape, was born in Virginia.

Don’t Miss: Cider tasting
Wine tasting experiences may lure visitors to Virginia Wine Country, but don’t overlook sampling some cider, too. There are over 50 cideries across the state producing some delicious ciders worth stopping in for.

An Undiscovered Gem

Snake River Valley, Idaho

Idaho may be known for its scenic vistas, epic skiing, and, of course, potatoes, but did you know the first wineries in the Pacific Northwest were in Idaho? Though Prohibition squashed the industry, today Idaho is in the middle of a great wine resurgence, with the number of wineries increasing by almost 58% in the last decade.

Most of Idaho’s 70 wineries and 1,300 acres under vine can be found in the Snake River Valley – Idaho’s first AVA – which is located in the southern part of the state just 30 miles from Boise. Here, a more moderate climate, minimal rainfall, and a high elevation make it more conducive to growing grapes, including Riesling, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Syrah.

Besides being conveniently close to Boise, the Snake River Valley, home to the Sunnyslope Wine Trail, is a must for wine lovers looking to discover the next under-the-radar wine region. Along with a casual environment, you’ll find a plethora of family-owned wineries producing handcrafted wines (with incredibly affordable price points), intimate tasting and dining experiences, and a general sense that people are truly excited to welcome you. And, because the region is still coming into its own, winemakers have the freedom to experiment with new clones, winemaking techniques, and varieties. No doubt the best is yet to come from this emerging wine region.

Fun Fact: Some vineyard elevations reach nearly 3,000 feet above sea level – some of the highest in the U.S.

Don’t Miss: Boise’s Urban Wine District
While quiet country vistas are the norm for wineries in the Snake River Valley, a handful of producers are taking a different approach by operating urban wineries near downtown Boise. If you’re looking to ditch the car and walk or bike instead, you’ll love the unique urban offerings, where quality wine, unpretentious vibes, and diverse settings are the name of the game.

Of course, there are many other dynamic U.S. wine regions that you should definitely seek out, such as Arizona’s Valle Verde, New Mexico’s Albuquerque and Santa Fe regions, Colorado’s Palisades, Oregon’s Willamette Valley and Rogue Valley, New York’s Finger Lakes, and Lake Michigan – to name just a few. Simply put: don’t limit your choices to just this list, because when you take the time to explore all the amazing wine, scenery, and experiences that each state has to offer, you may just end up with a newfound appreciation for our nation’s wine and the people behind the wine.

Tucked away on 250 secluded acres near St. Helena, the picturesque Meadowood has long been sought out by luxury fanatics looking to experience the best of Wine Country, in the form of five star service, deluxe amenities, and beautiful surroundings both in and outside of your room. But stunning accommodations aside, the property has also made a name for itself as a top foodie destination, namely for the Three Michelin-starred The Restaurant at Meadowood. While The Restaurant had to shutter its doors in 2020 due to damage from the Glass Fire, Meadowood’s dedication to celebrating the local bounty of Napa Valley continues to shine through its renowned culinary program. Just recently, the resort debuted a new dining destination, Forum—a casually refined gathering place for enjoying locally-inspired fare and cocktails. Indulge here for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, from inside the airy interior or out on the covered patio, then in between delicious eats, be sure to pay a visit to The Meadowood Spa, where rejuvenating facials, massages, and other wellness treatments will help you find balance and serenity.

Wine Country New Year’s Resolution Ideas 2023 https://www.winecountry.com/blog/new-years-resolution-ideas/ https://www.winecountry.com/blog/new-years-resolution-ideas/#respond Wed, 04 Jan 2023 18:07:32 +0000 https://www.winecountry.com/?p=66848 New year, new you! We’ve rounded up 8 of the best Wine Country-inspired resolutions for 2023, from traveling more to giving back to your community.

The post Wine Country New Year’s Resolution Ideas 2023 first appeared on WineCountry.com.

]]>

Now that the New Year is here, it’s time to begin planning for the year ahead, and for many of us, that includes setting goals and resolutions. Oftentimes, these goals and resolutions are seriously considered, prioritized on a list that sticks to the fridge or becomes our phone’s static background, but by the time January turns into a new month, the list is either physically or mentally buried behind other commitments that have interfered with follow-through.

Let’s set a goal together: let’s not do that this year. It may sound easier said than done, but it doesn’t have to be and that all starts with the type of resolutions and goals you set for yourself. Be realistic with your approach and you’ll find more success in your new year goal-setting. That’s why we’ve come up with a fun and engaging list of resolution ideas, which integrate overarching goals and plans like exploring more, spending more time in nature, and prioritizing self-care into your daily routine. After all, you need to build on your goals, so starting small sets you up to make strides, and ultimately, turn your resolutions not just into a checklist but a newfound lifestyle to enjoy well into the New Year, and beyond.

Below, eight New Year’s resolution ideas inspired by Wine Country for a bigger, better, brighter you in 2023.

Explore more

A family enjoying a day in the vineyard

Exploring and adventuring is subjective; while traveling across the world may be considered exploration for someone, for another, taking a new turn in their own backyard may be more in their comfort zone. Whatever “explore” means to you, embrace the opportunity to see new places, and try new things this year. For wine enthusiasts, maybe plan a trip to one of the nation’s up-and-coming wine regions. For a more adrenaline-inducing activity in your own backyard, make 2023 the year you take-in an aerial view of Napa Valley or Sonoma, while simultaneously crossing off riding in a hot air balloon from your bucket list. Sonoma County foodies might enjoy a local culinary tour of Point Reyes, savoring the mouthwatering flavors of the iconic destination revered for its nature. There’s always an adventure to be had, whether that’s near or far—so choose what exploring means to you and stick with it.

Spend more time in nature

Enjoying a solo walk in the woods

Whether you’re sporty and want to dedicate more time to cycling outdoors or simply want to spend less time in front of the screen and more time surrounded by greenery, this is a resolution that you can achieve. From wineries with Bocce ball, like Imagery Estate in Sonoma Valley, and those that offer a chance to zoom an ATV through the vineyards, like Napa’s Hess Persson Estate, to wineries with vineyard hikes, like Sonoma County’s Jordan Winery, to non-wine-related outdoor experiences like camping and golfing, Wine Country lends itself to spending time outside, where nature is soothing, grounding and inspiring all at once.

Prioritize self-care

A glimpse of Meadowood Spa
Courtesy of Meadowood Spa

This resolution is another subjective one because self-care can be anything from upping your exercise to mandating a weekly bubble bath; it’s anything that gives someone more “you” time and the more you prioritize this idea, the more you realize it’s entirely necessary. For daily habits centering around self-care, try meditating first thing in the morning; it’s amazing how focusing on yourself and your breath during the first 10 minutes of your morning can positively impact the other 23 hours and 50 minutes of your day. For weekly self-care habits, try setting boundaries when it comes to work hours; maybe end the day with a gym session so you have a hard cut-off between the day and your evening. For monthly or quarterly habits, make time to pamper yourself with a massage, such as at the uber-relaxing Meadowood Spa in Napa; with a devoted wellness treatment, like the multi-sensory bath immersion experience at MacArthur Place in Sonoma; or with a mineral-rich mud treatment, such as a healing mud bath at Dr. Wilkinson’s in Calistoga. Lastly, self-care doesn’t have to be grand but it can be once-in-a-while, like booking a staycation at a resort focusing on wellness.

Try new foods

Lady cooking in the kitchen

By now, it’s no secret that new culinary experiences allow us to better connect and engage with a person or place. Yet just because this resolution is mostly associated with traveling, doesn’t mean you can’t try new foods at home or in your own hometown. Put your apron on and sign up for a virtual cooking class; cooking is also a form of self-care with stress relieving benefits. For those who prefer someone else to take charge of the cooking, seek out a curated wine and food pairing experience, like at Trefethen Family Vineyards, or a multi-course farm-to-table lunch designed to highlight the synergy between local wine and locally-grown food. Local restaurants also present exotic foods in approachable ways, like caviar-topped deviled eggs at Regiis Ova in Yountville or fermented soy dip with crunchy veggies at The Charter Oak in St. Helena. This goal prioritizes one of our five senses—taste—which allows us to be more open-minded in general.

Give back more

volunteers organizing to give back

Sure, working on yourself is important but setting a goal of helping others by way of giving back encourages the spread of compassion and kindness. This can be both a selfless and selfish goal, as when people commit to giving back, either by volunteering at local food banks or community centers, or more passively by changing the way you buy, focusing on products that give back (like Landmark Vineyards, Boen, and Kendall-Jackson), you ultimately feel better. The important thing to remember though, is that feeling good is secondary to this resolution, it’s not why you start and it’s not the end goal—that’s reserved for helping others.

Become more involved in the community

Baked cookies on a tray

Having your neighbors over for dinner or baking cookies for the elderly on your street are ways to get involved in your immediate surrounds, but try setting a goal to expand that network to have more of a place in your community. From supporting local musicians at live music venues, such as JaM Cellars in downtown Napa, to regional artists on display at first Fridays, community events bring people together, and who wouldn’t want to be a part of that?

Selecting a book from a collection

While we tend to post a lot about the local happenings in California Wine Country, from Napa Valley to Sonoma and beyond, wineries also regularly share their newsworthy affairs. And vintners share their stories in the form of longer memoirs, like Tor Kenward who released his book, Reflections of a Vintner , in 2022, or industry experts reporting their findings in a thought-provoking book like Brian Freedman in Crushed , which also came out last year. Reading more stimulates conversation and inspires new ideas, plans, and perspectives for a more well-rounded version of yourself.

Learn a new skill

Painting a ceramic bowl

This has to be one of the most popular resolutions, but also one of the most forgotten because simply put, it’s a broad plan. Learning a new skill comes in many forms, from trying your hand at pottery to mastering an instrument, diving into a wine education class (Daou Vineyards and Trinchero offer fun opportunities) or trying a new sport. Whatever the skill, just know that you don’t have to plan on mastering it in 2023, simply commit to starting—that’s what matters.

As they say, ‘tis the season to eat, drink, and be merry, and between all the parties, dinners, and events in the coming weeks, this phrase will pretty much be the theme of our lives until after the ball drops into the new year.

So, with Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s Eve celebrations around the corner, we know there’s a lot to consider when it comes to choosing what to eat and drink during your festive gatherings. To help guide you, we’re sharing some of the best California wines to pair with all the flavors adorning your table this season.

Best California Wines to Pair With Your Holiday Meals

Sparkling Wine

Sparkling wine, regardless of where it’s from, remains a go-to during the holiday season. Not only is this effervescent beverage universally festive, but its bright acidity and refreshing profile offer a welcome respite from the salty, fatty fare often served during the holidays. Try a crisp, Brut style with salty popcorn, fried olives, Dungeness crab cakes, or potato latkes, which will cut through the oil and richness of the food to cleanse your palate. Or, pair a sweeter style, like a Demi-Sec or Sec, with holiday desserts, such as bread pudding and apple pie. But don’t feel limited to traditional Chardonnay- or Pinot Noir-based sparklers; something unexpected, like an earthy Sparkling Syrah, is not only a conversation starter, but a nice option for roast duck, pork belly, or even wild mushroom dishes.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Iron Horse Winter’s Cuvee Iron Horse Winter’s Cuvee, Sonoma County, $72 A bottle of Frank Family Vineyards Blanc de Blancs Frank Family Vineyards Blanc de Blancs, Napa Valley, $55 A bottle of Municipal Winemakers 10-Year FIZZ Sparkling Shiraz Municipal Winemakers 10-Year FIZZ Sparkling Shiraz, Santa Barbara County, $100

Pinot Noir

Pinot Noir is a lighter red that happens to be one of the most food-friendly wines around, as its red fruit flavors, earthy characters, low tannins, and noticeable acidity make it a great match for all sorts of fare. Plus, it tends to have lower levels of alcohol than some other reds, so it won’t overpower your meal (or weigh you down while you eat it). Try pairing Pinot Noir with soft cheeses, chicken, turkey, duck, pork, salmon, lamb shanks, or mushrooms this holiday season.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Landmark Hop Kiln Estate Pinot Noir Landmark Hop Kiln Estate Pinot Noir, Sonoma County, $85 A bottle of Patz & Hall Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir Patz & Hall Gap’s Crown Vineyard Pinot Noir, Sonoma County, $70 A bottle of Lumen Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir Lumen Julia’s Vineyard Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County, $62

Chardonnay

Chardonnay is one of the more versatile white wines for pairing with food–holiday favorites included. Unoaked or lightly oaked versions are natural choices for lighter meats, such as roasted turkey and chicken, as well as pasta in a light butter sauce. On the other hand, fuller bodied, oaked Chardonnays offer more richness than their unoaked counterparts, which make them prime candidates for creamy and/or rich dishes like mac n’ cheese, ham, butternut squash soup, and pumpkin lasagna.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of FEL Savoy Vineyard Chardonnay FEL Savoy Vineyard Chardonnay, Anderson Valley, $52 A bottle of Morgan Winery Double L Chardonnay Morgan Winery Double L Chardonnay, Santa Lucia Highlands, $46 A bottle of Bien Nacido Chardonnay Bien Nacido Chardonnay, Santa Barbara County, $50

Cabernet Sauvignon

California Cabernets tend to have concentrated black fruit flavors, lush tannins, powerful structure, and earthy, sometimes dusty qualities, with a noticeable amount of oak influence. Ideal for winter sipping, this robust, full-bodied varietal is a perfect partner for rich, flavorful foods that match the weight and intensity of the wine, from braised beef short ribs to roasted rack of lamb. No need to feel limited to red meat, however, as Cabernet Sauvignon also plays nicely with aged cheeses, including Blue cheese and cheddar.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Fantesca Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Fantesca Estate Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, $250 A bottle of Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon Jordan Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, $95 A bottle of The Setting Wines Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon The Setting Wines Alexander Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, Sonoma County, $95

Zinfandel

Zinfandel is a medium- to full-bodied red wine noted for its ripe fruit flavors (often described as jammy), black pepper and exotic spice notes, and high alcohol content. Simply put: Zinfandel is no shrinking violet, so you’ll want to serve it with fare that packs just as big of a flavor punch. Beef roasts, bacon-wrapped anything, rack of lamb, duck, sausages, and roasted veggies are all great options, but Zinfandel is also well-suited for spice-forward cuisines, like Moroccan and Indian, which will bring out the wine’s inherent spice notes.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of BACA Somersault Zinfandel BACA Somersault Zinfandel, Mendocino, $40 A bottle of Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel Seghesio Old Vine Zinfandel, Sonoma County, $40 A bottle of Williams-Selyem Bacigalupi Zinfandel Williams-Selyem Bacigalupi Zinfandel, Sonoma County, $65

Sauvignon Blanc

‘Tis the season for hearty casseroles and prime rib, but when you’re craving something on the lighter side, you’ll need a wine suitable to drink with it. Sauvignon Blanc is a light, high acid white wine known for its clean, refreshing flavors of citrus and tropical fruit, along with green herbal notes and saline-like minerality. This popular wine is a lovely match for goat cheese, salads, white meats, herb-driven dishes, crab and other seafood, as well as a variety of vegetables.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Dragonette Grimm’s Bluff Sauvignon Blanc Dragonette Grimm’s Bluff Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Barbara County, $55 A bottle of Aperture Sauvignon Blanc Aperture Sauvignon Blanc, Sonoma County, $45 A bottle of Storm Wines Sauvignon Blanc Storm Wines Sauvignon Blanc, Santa Barbara County, $28

Grenache / Grenache Blends

Grenache from California can vary in flavor profile, from savory and herbal to more bright red fruit dominant, but it differentiates itself from other medium-bodied reds by its spice character–think black pepper, anise, and clove. A natural pairing for lamb and sausage, whether braised, smoked, or roasted, Grenache is also a great choice for meats and veggies featuring exotic spices.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Kunin Alisos Vineyard Grenache Kunin Alisos Vineyard Grenache, Santa Barbara County, $38 A bottle of Tablas Creek Cotes de Tablas Tablas Creek Cotes de Tablas, Paso Robles, $40 A bottle of Kimsey Grenache Kimsey Grenache, Santa Barbara County, $72

Syrah / Syrah blends

Syrah is a rich and powerful red known for its expressive notes of black fruit, tobacco, black olive, and black pepper, with cured and smoked meat nuances. Though it can be big and inky, other times it can showcase velvet-like texture and a seamless elegance on the finish. A natural fit with bold foods, we enjoy pairing it with duck, beef, venison, and lamb–whether roasted, braised, or grilled–as well as wild mushrooms and hard cheeses.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Kukkula Noir Kukkula Noir, Paso Robles, $65 A bottle of Melville Estate Syrah Melville Estate Syrah, Santa Barbara County, $40 A bottle of Clos Solène Fleur de Solène Clos Solène Fleur de Solène, Paso Robles, $78

Riesling

Riesling often gets lumped into the ‘sweet wine’ category, which doesn’t do this impressive varietal justice, as sweetness is only part of its story. Incredibly aromatic and food-friendly, this versatile grape can produce white wines ranging from lean and minerally to off-dry with balanced sweetness, not to mention aged dessert wines that showcase wonderful complexity. Try Riesling with roasted chicken, duck, pork, ham, shrimp, scallops, and soft cheeses this season. Or, look for an off-dry Riesling for serving with spicy cuisines, including Asian and Thai, as it won’t accentuate the heat in the food-rather it will act as a refreshing mouth cleanser. Sweeter dessert styles, on the other hand, are perfect for rich cheeses, bread pudding, and fruit-based desserts.

Wines to Try:

A bottle of Smith-Madrone Estate Riesling Smith-Madrone Estate Riesling, Napa Valley, $34 A bottle of Tatomer Kick-on Ranch Riesling Tatomer Kick-on Ranch Riesling, Santa Barbara County, $38 A bottle of Trefethen Family Vineyards Late Harvest Riesling Trefethen Family Vineyards Late Harvest Riesling, Napa Valley, $50

California has firmly established its reputation as one of America’s most revered wine regions, but how much do you really know about California wine? Given that September is California Wine Month, we’ve rounded up some interesting facts about the Golden State and its wineries that may surprise you.

Winemaking Has a Long History in the State

California’s winemaking history began as early as the 1700s, when missionaries from Spain brought vines with them in order to produce wine for communion. The variety, known as the mission grape, thrived until about 1880. Although Southern California was the epicenter for wine throughout the first half of the 1800s, settlers were inspired to head north during the Gold Rush (1848 – 1855), laying the groundwork for today’s famous regions such as Napa and Sonoma.

Prohibition nearly destroyed the industry; a loophole in the law allowed for home winemaking, but with demand for grapes rising, growers ripped out the high-quality, pricier varieties in favor of cheaper grapes. Once the law was repealed, a new Viticulture and Enology program at the University of California Davis sought to revive the damaged industry. Growth was slow, but after the 1976 Judgment of Paris — where California wines received high accolades and bested their French counterparts — the state received a shot of confidence as well as adrenaline and the industry flourished.

There Are 147 AVAs

As of August 2022, there are 147 American Viticultural Areas (AVAs) in the state, with grapes grown as far north as Shasta and as far south as the Temecula Valley. Under state law, wines labeled as “California” must contain 100% fruit grown in the state and must also be produced in California. If a wine carries an AVA name on the label, 85% of the grapes must come from the stated designation. As winemakers continue to understand their terroir, new AVAs are continually proposed. Just recently, the West Sonoma Coast AVA and the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA obtained TTB approval to become official appellations.

Vineyards Play Host to Numerous International Grapes

There are over 100 different grape varieties cultivated in California, and the number continues to grow. While chardonnay is the most popular variety, followed closely by cabernet sauvignon, it’s not unusual to find grapes indigenous to other countries, like albariño from Spain, touriga nacional from Portugal, and barbera from Italy, dotted throughout vineyards. Plus, vineyards of zinfandel, considered America’s heritage grape, continue to thrive and contain some of the oldest vines — many over 100 years old — in the country.

No Other State in the U.S. Produces More Wine

The Golden State is by far the largest producer of American wine, making 81% of all U.S. wine and clocking in as the world’s fourth leading wine producer. According to the 2021 California Crush Report, 3,632 thousand tons of wine grapes were harvested in 2021. The majority were red grapes with 2,031 thousand tons and whites made up 1,601 thousand tons. California also has the largest number of wineries in the country, with 4,700 at last count, which comprises nearly half the wineries in the entire country. Oregon and Washington, which often flip-flop between second and third place, each only have about 800 – 1,000 estates.

California’s Wine Regions Welcome Guests With Open Arms

With the abundance of spas, bed and breakfasts, and luxury resorts throughout California’s wine regions, the state is a perfect vacation getaway for wine lovers. Tasting rooms welcome guests for wine tastings and unique experiences, while Wine Country restaurants impress with local, seasonal cuisine. In fact, in Northern California Wine Country alone, there are a half dozen Michelin-starred restaurants, with plenty more in the San Francisco vicinity.

The State Has Some of the Country’s Most Luxurious Tasting Rooms

Speaking of wine tasting, California has some of the most luxurious and interactive wine tasting experiences in the country. Napa in particular has seen innovative spaces that include hands-on workshops, food and wine pairing opportunities, and design-forward spaces open in the past few years, but all of the California wine regions offer something special. There’s no better place to explore the nuances of cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, pinot noir, or even lesser-known varietals than in one of California Wine Country’s numerous tasting rooms.

The State Has Diverse Climates

Up and down the length of the state, climate variations allow popular varietals like pinot noir and zinfandel — as well as lesser-known grape varietals — to flourish. In general, the state is sunny and warm, but distinct differences create grape diversity. Vineyards close to the Pacific Ocean enjoy a cooling effect from the water, and in places like Santa Barbara and the Sonoma Coast, fog also plays an essential part in moderating the temperature of the grapes. More inland valley sites, such as the Sierra Foothills and Central Valley, also receive similar temperature control from other bodies of water, such as rivers and lakes. Hillside vineyards, on the other hand, thrive in the sunshine but grapes retain their balance through cooling winds.

The Growing Season Is Usually Long And Steady

Across most of the state, the heaviest rains tend to happen October through March, at which point vintners usually see bud break. Heavy late-spring rains could threaten the delicate buds, as well as mold and fungus from humidity, but if nature cooperates, as it often does in California, grapes should ease into a long, warm summer. Harvest usually begins in mid-September and concludes a few weeks later. Of course, things fluctuate in different parts of the state, but overall, California’s weather makes it an ideal place for grape growing with a long season.

California Wines Are the Best-Known Internationally

When other countries think of American wine, they are most likely referring to California wine. A whopping 90 percent of U.S. wine exported to other parts of the world — 142 countries, to be exact — is from California.

It’s a Great Place to Learn About Wine — Or Even to Become a Winemaker

For those who want to become winemakers themselves, there’s no better place to obtain an education than in California Wine Country. In addition to hands-on experiences at wineries, universities such as Sonoma State and University of California-Davis offer some of the most comprehensive education programs about the wine industry.

While each wine region throughout California is unique, from Anderson Valley to Monterey, Paso Robles to Temecula Valley, California as a whole is a premier place for producing and tasting world-class wine.

During the tour, you’ll get to see the vines up close while learning firsthand about the Benziger family’s commitment to Biodynamic farming practices.

Insider Tip: The Benziger family keeps sheep and Scottish Highlander Cattle, both a big part of a Biodynamic farm. They also cultivate olive trees and sell their organic olive oil on site.

Hall Wines Rutherford

56 Auberge Road, Rutherford, CA 94573, (707) 967-2626

Hall Wines is known far and wide for its world-class art collection, curated by owner Kathryn Hall. Installations include indoor and outdoor sculptures, as well as furniture and oil paintings. One of the most coveted tasting experiences at Hall Rutherford is in the wine caves. The centerpiece of the wine caves is the incredible chandelier designed by Donald Lipski. Made up of over 1500 Austrian crystals, the chandelier is designed to resemble the root system of an ancient vine. This masterpiece hangs above a solid cherry wood table with an inset of illuminated onyx. Nowhere else in the world will you taste wine under such a magnificent work of art.

Insider Tip: If you have time for only one or two Napa winery visits and want a serious tasting experience that includes information about winemaking, varieties, and why the effects of the climate and season are essential to winemaking, definitely include Hall in your plans. Most of the tastings last 60 to 90 minutes, but with such a beautiful collection of artwork, you won’t want to rush through your wine tasting to fit in four more wineries.

Jarvis caves

Jarvis Estate Caves

2970 Monticello Road, Napa, CA 94558, (707) 255-5280

Go underground at Jarvis Estate, considered to offer one of the best cave experiences in Napa Valley. The entire Jarvis winery operation, including fermentation tanks, are underground inside the 45,000-square-foot space. While this is on its own quite an engineering marvel, there’s more. Nature supplies an underground spring that has been allowed to flow freely through the caves, controlling the temperature and humidity. It also adds a relaxing aesthetic you won’t find anywhere else.

Then there’s the Crystal Room, filled with geodes imported from Brazil. Touring the wine caves at Jarvis is a one-of-a-kind experience. Be sure to plan ahead, because the tasting experience and their stellar wines are extremely popular, and book up months in advance.

Insider Tip: The tasting is presented slightly differently than many other Napa wineries in that all wines are poured at the same time, and you’re encouraged to taste, not finish each pour, then revisit a wine after a few minutes.

Francis Ford Coppola Winery

300 Via Archimedes, Geyserville, CA 95441, (707) 857-1071

Film director Francis Ford Coppola has created a space in Sonoma County where visitors come to enjoy the wine, and locals come to relax and enjoy the swimming pools (both of them – all 3,600 square feet!). This is an experience the whole family can enjoy. One caveat, though… you cannot leave your kids unattended and go wine tasting. Maybe you can take turns with your friends or partner?

There are plenty of other unusual activities at Coppola, including an entire room devoted to the many Academy Award-winning films he has directed. Coppola has directed over 50 films, and the memorabilia is impressive. Don’t miss the Godfather Room and be sure to tell them Don Corleone sent you.

Insider Tip: Reservations for the pool are separate from tasting room reservations and you must book in advance. Splurge for a Cabine Package Reservation for four (includes one Cabine, four pool passes, and four lounge chairs). Cabines come equipped with a private shower, four towels, up to four Sofia Mini singles, a deck of Coppola playing cards, and a copy of Zoetrope: All-Story magazine, which received the National Magazine Award for Fiction.

Sottomarino Winery*

(*Temporarily closed. Scheduled to reopen December 2022)
400 California Avenue, San Francisco, CA 94130, (415) 967-4200

Think good wine can’t be found on a submarine? Think again. Treasure Island, a former navy base in the San Francisco Bay, is now home to several wine tasting experiences but only one claims the submarine, Sottomarino (which means “submarine” in Italian). Appropriately, Sottomarino serves wine made from Italian varieties like sangiovese and dolcetto. Visit this historic winery when it reopens later this year to experience what it’s like to sip wine inside an authentic World War II submarine training vessel, then spend the day exploring the island and taking in the stunning views of the Bay and city skyline.

Insider Tip: Go on a beautiful Sunday afternoon when the Treasure Island Flea Market is open and pick up some food from the flea market food trucks to enjoy while sitting outside sipping some wine from Sottomarino.

Sandy Road Vineyards

383 Vineyard Row, Johnson City, TX 78636, (512) 589-1826

The owners of Sandy Road Vineyards took a chance and created a fun and relaxing tasting room…in a tree! That’s right, your wine tasting experience will happen from the tasting deck of a treehouse, fifteen feet above the ground and overlooking the vineyards. Now it is Texas, so if the weather is extreme (think 90 degrees or higher), or a sudden windstorm kicks up, they will thoughtfully reschedule your tasting to another weekend. If you cannot climb the steps to the treehouse there is a covered pavilion also set up for tastings.

Insider Tip: Schedule the treehouse tasting experience with owner Reagan Sivadon. He’s fun and passionate about his wines. Try the estate Pet-Nat, a delicious blend of 90% grenache and 10% prieto picudo grapes.

Becker Vineyard

Becker Vineyards

464 Becker Farms Road, Fredericksburg, TX 78624, (830) 644-2681

Visit Provence in Texas at Becker Vineyards in the Texas Hill Country. From April through May you can enjoy a glass of wine while strolling through the lavender fields. Becker has an excellent selection of award-winning wines made from grapes sourced solely in Texas. If you can’t make it for the lavender season there are forty-six acres of vineyards to enjoy, along with seasonal tastings and dinners. Guided tours at the estate winery are subject to staff availability and winery production. However, the tasting room is open daily for your sipping pleasure.

Insider Tip: They charge $25 for six tastes, which includes a Riedel wine glass for you to take home.

Though it may be far away from any major cosmopolitan area, Paso Robles has a surprising number of quality restaurants and, just like its burgeoning wine industry, the culinary scene here is one to take note of. While tasty food is a draw, of course, restaurants here also take sourcing locally seriously, so you can feel good knowing that most of what you’re eating is fresh and in-season. Here are our picks for the best places to dine in Paso Robles, whether you’re craving French cuisine, comforting Italian, fresh Californian fare, Latin flavors, or otherwise.

Insider Tip

If you love The Hatch’s food and cocktail program, don’t miss checking out their sister restaurant next door: Dellas. Here, you’ll find wood-fired pizzas, a full bar (the gin cocktails are a must), and a variety of shared plates served inside an inviting and upbeat setting.

Restaurant at Niner Wine Estates

The Restaurant at Niner Wine Estates is open for lunch daily and makes for a great stop while venturing around Paso Robles Wine Country. While the interior has a grand fireplace and is a lovely place to enjoy a meal, the best seats are outside on the covered patio overlooking the vines and chef's garden. Niner tries to keep the menu as fresh and seasonal as possible for their “garden-to-table” inspired menu, utilizing ingredients grown in their garden, eggs from the winery's 20 chickens, meat from local butchers and farms, and artisanal products made locally. The winery even has their own extra-virgin olive oil milled from the property's 350 olive trees.

Insider Tip

If you’d rather enjoy coffee than wine with your lunch, Niner offers their own roast from local roaster, Joebella, which they age in old Niner barrels to give the blend a unique flavor profile.
