If so this tour will be a rare treat; if not you should really rethink your priorities. There is a TON of information (and cheese) to digest as you learn about the history of local creameries and see how things are made up close. Our tour guides, Alex and Elizabeth, seemed to know more about the area and industry than I know about my own life. Along the way, we saw sheep get milked like pros and cheese wheels being lovingly scrubbed by hand. We met sheep, goats, buffalo, and cows, plus the occasional meandering dog and chicken, and all were eager to hang out and say hi. Well, except the sheep who were content to judge us from a safe distance. We even got to try buffalo milk gelato. Between the beautiful scenery, the delicious food, and the lovable creatures, this is an educational experience you won’t want to miss.

With eight of us on tour, including our two guides Elizabeth and Alex, it felt like we were on a day out with friends. That is, if your friends were full of local knowledge, their food selections were world class, and your day was flawlessly organized. Starting with cheese tasting at Cowgirl Creamery in Point Reyes Station, we drove to the Tomales Farmstead Creamery. We arrived to see the sheep acting like, well, sheep, as they lined up to be milked. Then up the road to see and pet the goats before returning to a superb locavore picnic with the owner. Then our final stop: bonding with water buffalo and sampling the oh-so-decadent gelato at Double 8 Dairy. This tour is the epitome of what to love about California local food and the heart that’s behind it. Take it!

A native of West Marin and so incredibly knowledgable and respect of her heritage and the history of the area, there is no better guide to show you the literal fruits of these farmer’s labor. A fully immersive experience beginning at Cowgirl Creamery, followed by a visit to Tomales Farmstead Creamery. When there, we enjoyed an hour of petting baby goats, going on a farm tour and digging into a delicious spread of of course cheeses and local meads. I walked about with two different cheeses for dinner that night. The day ended at Double 8 Ranch where we met water buffalo(mama’s and babies), ate buffalo milk pistachio gelato and were there just in time for samples of fresh mozzarella. Elizabeth then drove back to our car full and happy. This is THE best way to experience the foodie side of West Marin…but is there any other side?!

Elizabeth, our guide, is so knowledgeable about the area and truly has an ingrained relationship with the land and the farms we visited. The cheese was amazing and we were so welcomed on all of our stops. I highly recommend for cheese enthusiasts, curious explorers (West Marin is so beautiful!), and anyone who appreciates incredibly cute animals. Truly a one-of-a-kind California experience!
