Wine grapes have been cultivated for at least 2,000 years… that’s a long time! But, in the online world, celebrating the grape only started a decade or so ago. With the onset of social media and hashtags, wine holidays have taken off, and now there’s at least one wine holiday to celebrate per month — some months there are multiple wine days.

No one knows how all these official wine days started, and no one seems to really care. It’s as though you can almost make up any old wine holiday nowadays — international, national, or whatever you like. Don’t like zinfandel? No problem, because Tempranillo Day is less than a week after. A fan of moscato? There’s an official day to celebrate it. From the obscure to the historical and everything in between, we’ve put together a calendar of the most celebrated national and international wine days (and a few others) to note. If you don’t see a day you think should be recognized, why not start your own by creating a hashtag and tweeting the heck out of it? Go for it!

20 National & International Wine Days to Note in 2023

February 16th – International Syrah Day

This versatile grape has many fans around the world, so whether you like it savory or fruit-forward, you’ll want to enjoy a glass or two to celebrate. #SyrahDay

February 18th – Global Drink Wine Day

Grab a glass and pour yourself something delicious to join fellow wine lovers across the globe as they pay homage to the fine art of drinking wine. #DrinkWineDay

March 3rd – National Mulled Wine Day

While it might make more sense for this holiday to take place in January or February, mulled wine is nevertheless a tasty way to warm up from that winter chill. #MulledWineDay

March 13th – International Riesling Day

Don’t be fooled into thinking riesling is just another sweet wine; this incredible grape makes wines of many styles and some of the most age-worthy bottlings in the world. #RieslingDay

April 17th – International Malbec Day

Also known as World Malbec Day, this day celebrates the French red wine grape that thrives in Argentina. On April 17, 1853, the president of Argentina began an initiative to transform the wine industry there. Hence, Malbec Day was started to commemorate that push. #WorldMalbecDay

May 5th – International Sauvignon Blanc Day

Sauvignon blanc is a white wine grape that is planted in many different places around the world, but it grows especially well in New Zealand. Early May is harvest time in New Zealand and is a fitting time to celebrate Sauvignon Blanc Day, which takes place on the first Friday in May each year. #SauvBlancDay

May 9th – World Moscato Day

With more people than you would imagine drinking this light-bodied sweet wine, it’s a good thing there’s a day for moscato fans to celebrate, too. #WorldMoscatoDay

May 24th – The Anniversary of the Judgment of Paris

A day to commemorate the wines of California making their world debut in France is a big deal. We say drink a great California chardonnay or cabernet to celebrate, which are the wines that beat out their French counterparts in this infamous competition over 40 years ago.

May 25th – National Wine Day

May is a busy month for wine lovers, but if you’re only going to celebrate one national wine holiday this month, don’t miss this one. #NationalWineDay

May 26th – International Chardonnay Day

Whether you like it extra oaky and buttery or crisp and clean, you’ll want to note that Chardonnay Day is designated the Thursday before Memorial Day in the U.S. #Chardday

June 10th – National Rosé Day

Rosé Day is interesting because no one can agree on exactly which day it should be, but most celebrate it on the second Saturday of June each year. We think a summer holiday to recognize the pink stuff only makes sense, as there’s nothing better than a chilled glass of rosé on a hot day! #NationalRoseDay

June 18th – Drink Chenin Blanc Day

Chenin blanc is a white wine grape from the Loire Valley of France. With naturally high acid and the ability to adapt to different styles and sweetness, it tends to be a favorite among serious wine enthusiasts looking for versatility. #DrinkCheninDay

June 21st – World Lambrusco Day

This wine from Italy is really quite delicious. It can be either sweet, dry, or off-dry and it is always effervescent or slightly sparkling. Lambrusco fans have campaigned for it to have its own day worldwide, so if you haven’t already, try it — it is a refreshing option on a warm summer day and pairs well with many foods. #WorldLambruscoDay

August 13th – International Prosecco Day

Prosecco is an Italian sparkling wine made from the glera grape. This spumante bubbly is characteristically pretty afforable with a subtle hint of sweetness. #ProseccoDay

August 18th – Pinot Noir Day

Pinot Noir Day is always at the end of August. Kicking off pinot noir’s celebratory day is the International Pinot Noir Celebration, which takes place at the end of July in McMinnville, Oregon. It is said to be the best wine event of its kind anywhere, so proclaimed by the author of The World Atlas of Wine, Jancis Robinson, but even if you can’t make it, be sure to pop the cork on a favorite bottling. #PinotNoirDay

August 31st – International Cabernet Day

Cabernet Day is the Thursday before Labor Day in the U.S., a preemptive start to what we would normally consider red wine season: fall and winter. #CabernetDay

September 15th – International Grenache Day

Established by The Grenache Association to celebrate this diverse grape, it’s a great day to enjoy a bottle of a grenache or grenache blend. After all, grenache is one of the most widely planted red wine grape varieties in the world. #InternationalGrenacheDay

November 9th – International Tempranillo Day

Tempranillo Day is another one of the few holidays that has a real honest beginning and was created by a wine association; not made up by some social media or marketing wizard. #TempranilloDay

November 15th – National Zinfandel Day

National Zinfandel Day takes place the third Wednesday of each November. This wine pairs great with holiday meals, so be sure to stock up on a few zinfandels to enjoy long after this particular day has passed. #NationalZinfandelDay

December 31st – National Champagne Day

Champagne Day has been appropriately designated December 31st, however, the first day of the year could get off to a better start with a little bubbly, too, don’t you think? #ChampagneDay

Regardless if you are a die-hard wine holiday follower or keep it more light-hearted, you really don’t need a day to drink wine, do you? Perhaps the best way to celebrate these international and national wine days is to simply support your local producers, wine shops, and wine bars throughout the year, and if you can, visit a local winery or vineyard. Cheers!

The 10 Best Rosés For Valentine’s Day and Spring https://www.winecountry.com/blog/best-roses-for-spring/ https://www.winecountry.com/blog/best-roses-for-spring/#respond Wed, 30 Jan 2019 18:45:44 +0000 https://www.winecountry.com/?p=49228 With Valentine's Day and spring just around the corner, we're thinking pink with our list of the 10 best rosé wines to help celebrate the season.

We might be in the dull, gray days of winter, but there is a pink light on the horizon. Valentine’s Day, whether celebrated with friends, a significant other, or even solo, is a break from the cold doldrums. Even more importantly, it’s a sign that spring — and the release of new rosé wines — is imminent.

Although the wine has roots in Provence, France, winemakers all over the world have keyed into the charms of rosé, and many now take the pink-hued sipper as seriously as their white and red wines. A range of styles and price points means there’s a rosé for every palate and occasion, and with Valentine’s Day — the unofficial start of rosé season — and spring just around the corner, here are our picks for the best rosé wines to celebrate with.

The Best Rosés For Valentine’s Day

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Inman Family Wines, Endless Crush Rosé of Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA

The winery from pioneering winemaker Kathleen Inman follows what they call “sensitive farming” in the vineyards, and their rosé showcases this care and attention. The low-intervention winemaking results in a delicate rosé that pays homage to a special bottle and a romantic Provence picnic Kathleen and her husband had while visiting the south of France over 25 years ago. A wine with a love story? Sounds like the perfect pick for V-Day.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Raymond Vineyards, Small Lot Collection Rosé, Carneros, CA

The bordello-inspired tasting room of Raymond is a sultry setting for a flight, and this rosé of pinot noir takes inspiration from the estate’s sexy vibe. Luscious fruit and a hint of citrus make for a lively cuvée — a great complement to any celebratory dinner.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Mulderbosch, Cabernet Sauvignon Rosé, Stellenbosch, South Africa

Mulderbosch’s first cabernet-based rosé wine was created in 1999, well ahead of the rosé craze we see today. Their commitment to high-quality wine continues and the property designates specific vineyards solely for rosé production. Bright strawberry and berries give way to hints of herbs and mint in this savory, luscious bottle. Hint: many southern hemisphere producers are already debuting their 2018 vintage.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Mumm Napa, Brut Rosé, Napa, CA

Don’t forget the bubbles! Although the parent company of this estate is a world-renowned French Champagne house, Mumm Napa has earned a quality reputation in its own right. The bright fruit flavors and mousse-y, luscious bubbles in this versatile sparkling rosé are the perfect way to toast to your love.

The Best Rosés For Spring

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

DeLoach Vineyards, Estate Rosé of Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, CA

This biodynamic producer, dedicated to eco-friendly farming practices, sources fruit from their estate vineyard in the Russian River Valley. Redolent of red berries, strawberries, and orange blossom, this delightful, aromatic rosé wine is better than a bouquet of flowers.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Domaines Ott, Clos Mireille, Provence, France

One of the premier rosé wine producers in the birthplace of rosé wine, Domaines Ott established themselves in the Provence region of France in 1896 and have earned a reputation as a serious rosé maker. Their rosés, a traditional blend of grenache, cinsault, and syrah, are revered for their complex yet fresh profile.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

J Vineyards, Brut Rosé, Russian River Valley, CA

This vibrant salmon-colored bottle of bubbly comes from the prominent sparkling wine producer, J Vineyards, in Sonoma’s Russian River Valley. Offering notes of strawberry, blood orange, and almonds, its creamy mouthfeel and lively bubbles add to the overall enjoyment of this energetic sparkling wine.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Bodegas Los Bermejos, Listán Negro Rosado, Canary Islands, Spain

The volcanic soils of the Canary Islands lend a unique profile to this rosé. Unlike ordinary vineyards, vines are cultivated in pits to protect them from the wind. Fresh berries meet a driving minerality in this multifaceted wine.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Long Meadow Ranch, Rosé of Pinot Noir, Anderson Valley, CA

Organic champion Long Meadow Ranch focuses on pinot noir at their new-ish property in Anderson Valley. They dedicate vineyard plots to rosé production and take their rosé as seriously as the red expressions of this elegant grape.

THE 10 BEST ROSÉS FOR VALENTINE’S DAY AND SPRING

Proprietà Sperino, Rosa del Rosa, Piedmont, Italy

This nebbiolo-dominant rosé from a family-run estate in Piedmont has had a cult following for years. It leans on the fuller, more savory side of the spectrum, with strawberry, pomegranate, and delectable baking spice flavors coming through on the palate. High in acidity, it’s a lively, engaging rosé.

Thanksgiving is a time for family, friends… and a very crowded dinner table. From the perennial favorites like turkey to the outliers (Aunt Ida’s “special casserole”), there are a ton of flavors duking it out for space on your plate.

When it comes to wine, instead of trying to pair each wine with a specific dish, your best strategy is to create a wine buffet, stocked with versatile bottles that can easily swing from cranberry sauce to green bean casserole. Let guests explore the range and find one (or all!) that suits their palates. Here, we break down some of our top picks.

White Wines

Courtesy of Chateau Montelena

For any guest that claims riesling is “too sweet,” introduce them to Hermann J. Wiemer‘s Dry Riesling, Finger Lakes, NY, 2017. Luscious peach and apricot flavors are balanced with slate and minerality. What makes riesling so appealing for the feast is the ability for its naturally high acid content to cut through fattier foods.

Gewürztraminer plays a dual role at the meal: it’s a lovely aperitif to sip on while (im)patiently waiting for the turkey to be carved, but it’s also a classic pairing with spicier flavors. Gundlach Bundschu‘s Gewürztraminer, Estate Vineyard, Sonoma Coast, CA, 2017, is a lychee and ginger delight; with great body and slightly viscous texture, it’s a stellar example of this grape.

Rosé Wines

Courtesy of Cantine San Marzano

Instead of the light and fruity version you sipped all summer, opt for a rosé that has a few more savory tones in its profile. The Cantine San Marzano, Tramari Rosé, Puglia, Italy, 2017, is bright, bracingly acidic, and redolent of strawberries and cherries, but a mineral, herbaceous undercurrent offers an element of complexity that will suit this meal quite well.

Red Wines

10 Best Thanksgiving Wines for Your Holiday Table
Courtesy of Cecchi

If you’re only going to have one red wine option, make it a pinot noir. Its red-fruited, earthy character pairs well with a range of flavors, while its lighter body ensures it won’t overwhelm the turkey or any lean proteins. Long Meadow Ranch‘s Pinot Noir, 2015, from their newer Anderson Valley estate in Mendocino County, jumps with cherry, raspberry, and strawberry notes, along with white pepper and an earthy layer.

Chianti Classico, with its foundation of Sangiovese, is another Turkey Day winner. Cecchi, Storia di Famiglia, Chianti Classico, Tuscany, IT, 2015, pops with red berries up front and exhibits a slight tone of rose. Those velvety tannins and long length won’t overwhelm the palate. Plus, with a name that translates to “family history,” is there any better wine for Thanksgiving’s family theme?

For a slightly offbeat red wine option (much like your Uncle’s jokes), Alheit Flotsam and Jetsam, Cinsault Stalwart, South Africa, 2017, is an underrated grape that’s starting to capture winemakers’ attention. This lighter-bodied wine is bright and fresh with lively red fruit (it also works well served slightly chilled).

Sparkling Wines

For those felled by indecision, sparkling wine is always the answer. Domaine Carneros, Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs, Napa Valley, CA, 2011, founded by the famed Champagne family, Taittinger, offers a creamy, mouss-y texture, baked fruit, and brioche, all balanced with lovely minerality.

Looking for something less traditional? The William Chris Vineyards, Pet Nat Rosé, Texas, 2017, starts with delicious strawberries and cream, but then a savory, almost cider-like quality comes through. Less effervescent than a regular sparkling wine, it’s a fun little number for the Thanksgiving table.

Dessert Wines

When the parade of pies starts hitting the table, it’s time to open up a wine that compliments the meal’s finale: W. & J. Graham’s Vintage Port, Portugal, 2016. For Port, vintages are only declared in the best years, and 2016 was considered a record-breaking year, where nearly all port houses declared the vintage. Cassis and plum are the backbone of this luscious and balanced sweet sipper.

At the end of the day, Thanksgiving is about appreciating those around you and being thankful for the moments when we can share delicious food and wine together.

However, for a new take on the traditional sweet potato casserole, the chefs at The Culinary Institute of America suggest a Latin twist by making this side dish with plantains.

Click Here to watch more videos from The Culinary Institute of America (CIA) highlighting many of their recipes perfect for any occasion.

    INGREDIENTS:
    • 3 plantains, very ripe, approximately 2 cups
    • 3 medium sweet potatoes, approximately 2 cups
    • 1 1/2 large russet potatoes, approximately 2 cups
    • 1/4 to 1/2 cup heavy cream, hot
    • 1/4 to 1/2 cup milk, hot
    • 4 ounces unsalted butter
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
    • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground allspice
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
    • 1/8 teaspoon ground nutmeg
    • Salt as needed
    • Black pepper as needed

    INSTRUCTIONS:

    • In a 350 degree F oven, bake plantains, sweet potatoes, and russet potatoes in their skins until soft, approximately 30 to 45 minutes.
    • Once the potatoes and sweet potatoes are fully cooked, cut them lengthwise and force them, flesh side down, through a medium sized wire rack into a bowl. The skins will stay behind on the wire rack.
    • Peel the plantains and puree together with the russet and sweet potatoes with a food mill or ricer, or mash in a standing mixer with the paddle attachment.
    • Add the 1/4 cup cream, 1/4 cup milk, butter, and all the spices and mix until smooth. Depending on the ripeness of the plantains, you may need to add up to 1/4 cup more of both cream and milk if you find the mixture too dry.
    • Add salt and pepper to taste and adjust seasonings as needed.
